I’m very much looking forward to next year when I’ll be looking to spend a significant amount of time with these enigmatic birds. It is one of my many neglected UK species and as a true wildlife icon I’ve overlooked it for far too long. This image was captured up at Hermaness National Nature Reserve on the northernmost tip of the Shetland Islands and it was one of those brief moments where I was willing the puffin to lean forward and pluck the single stem of purple thrift. Like so many species the location is absolutely vital and simply turning up to a place where they are present doesn’t necessarily guarantee great images. As the puffin is such a well photographed bird the quality of my resulting images is vital as I’ve no interest in simply capturing another standard puffin image or another standard puffin in flight image. As is so often the case though I won’t go with any preconceived idea of the images that I’ll want to try and capture. It will as it always is with me a completely organic process where I’ll simply react to what is going on in any given day. The longer that I can stay with them then of course image ideas will start to develop as I start to notice patterns or locations of behaviour, or differences in the fall of light, but I’m not limit my thinking by obsessing about a particular type of image. For now then I’ll leave you with a contemplative puffin looking quizzically at a piece of purple thrift, the caption I’ll leave to your imaginations!
