I keep returning to this picture because of the hats and, well, the bourbon. White hat, center, good ol' Jack Daniels (the) and, to his immediate right and ace/deuce crushing the black felt, a detective story. Why, in the late 1800's, is that brother sitting next to Jack? Back rows filled, and he showed up late? Nah. Turns out, he's the son of Nearis (Nearest) Green, the man, and also a slave, who taught Jack Daniels the recipe for his whiskey. Story goes that Dan Call, a Tennessee grocer whom Jack worked for as a kid, held the recipe, but, now, according to the JD distillery and the NYTimes, it was actually ol' Nearest, one of Call's slaves. Ever wonder why Scotch whisky & American whiskey differ beyond the 'e?' African traditions preserved & distilled by black Americans seem to be part of the answer. 'Uncle Nearest ('Uncle' - family! ;-) is the best whiskey maker that I know of,' Call is to have told young Jack. 'Cause you were a slave didn't preclude you from genius...just the monetizing of your genius. Nearest Green...but not near enough. America's more beautiful and complex when the truth comes out. Google it and enjoy your shot o' 'Nearest!'
