Photo by @FransLanting While tracking cheetahs in Kenya on assignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック, I became acquainted with a coalition of three brothers known as Honey’s Boys who operated in a portion of the Maasai Mara that is visited by many tourists. These males grew up in public and have been photographed countless times. They act like stars—and they are. But cheetahs are actually rare. In the entire Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, which covers 10,000 square miles, there are more than 3,000 lions and well over 1,000 leopards—but only 300 cheetahs. In all of Africa there may be fewer than a dozen places large enough to support a viable population of these extraordinary cats. Honey’s Boys have given multitudes of safari-goers the thrill of a lifetime, and at the same time, they have passed on their precious genes to a next generation of cats. How much more can we expect from any one cheetah? And how much are we doing in return? The Cheetah Conservation Fund, Panthera, and the Wildlife Conservation Network are three of the fine organizations working to ensure a future for this beautiful big cat. Follow me @FransLanting to see an Olympics gallery of “Animals as Athletes,” including cheetahs—the fastest land animal on earth.
