Payul’s school used to be mobile, moving around the plateau to serve the areas nomadic families, but as nomadic traditions disappear and people change to living in permanent modern-style homes, the school established a permanent location.
The tibetan plateau is on the front lines of climate change. Referred to as “the third pole”, nearly half of the world’s population relies on a river that originates in Tibet, and is home to a wide variety of plant and animal life - including the iconic snow leopard. But as global temperatures increase, Tibetan monks report a drastic reduction in the quantities of fresh water flowing to neighbouring countries, and also a dramatic reduction in wildlife.
