Thanks to the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ for helping us shed light on the environmental disaster currently going on in the Madre de Dios region of the Peruvian Amazon. Illegal gold miners are cutting down broad swaths of jungle, and poisoning rivers that feed local communities with mercury, leading to permanent brain damage for indigenous children. "The next generations will pay for what we are doing now," said Manuel Pulgar-Vidal, who heads the Peruvian Ministry of the Environment.
