The area receives only 11 inches of precipitation each year and was measured to be the quietest of the U.S. National Parks in the contiguous 48 states. The park also contains the Sangre de Cristo Mountains with six peaks over 13,000 feet. Sand temperatures can reach a blistering 140 degrees Fahrenheit during hot summer days and dunes are up to 700 feet high.
