When two graduate students living in Philadelphia planned their wedding in May, they forgot the DNC would be in town. But the importance of the event and the host city wasn’t lost on Erdem and Polina Varol.

“It is very symbolic to us that we got married in the birthplace of freedom,” Erdem who is from Turkey said. “In her country (Israel) we’re legally not allowed to get married because we’re from different faiths and in my country it would also be difficult.”

“In America, no one judges us for where we come from, we’re only judged by where we’re going,” he said.
