Photo by @RalphLeeHopkins On a visit to a trappers cabin in Woodford, just south of 80 degrees north, we met the real deal – Norwegian trapper Kjell Reidar Hovelsrud, who first came to Svalbard in 1968 to track polar bears for scientists. He then became a full-time hunter and trapper hunting polar bears until they were protected in 1973 and then polar fox, until he gave up trapping in 1994. He regaled us with stories about polar bear encounters, like the time he was trapped in his cabin without his gun for 4 hours while a big male polar bear ate 20 kilos of dried fish and seal meat...
