My sister, @MissLuluLaroo, and all my friends stand before you to ask for your help. Today is American Animal Hospital Association's big day. AAHA says it's to "celebrate champions for excellent care." In honor of all the cats that have been declawed at all the AAHA hospitals, let's remind them that declawing isn't "excellent care." In fact it's the complete opposite of that and it is wrong. Please post your cat photos on twitter, facebook, and instagram with #Aahaday and #blogpawschat with inspiring messages of why cats should always keep their claws. AAHA's position statement says they are "strongly opposed to declawing.” I ask them this. What’s the point of having a declaw position if you aren’t going to follow it yourselves? What kind of example are you setting for the children and future veterinarians in this noble profession that is all about healing animals? There's a story at AVMA.org about the new AAHA President and she talks about what inspired her to be a vet. “When Dr. Nancy Soares was about 8, she would go weekly with her dad to a family friend’s farm. She played with a black Labrador Retriever named Harvey. “One day I was visiting, and that day, the owner of the farm said that today was going to be Harvey’s last day,” she said. “And the veterinarian there was kind enough to let me be with him.” She continued, “To understand that pain and suffering could be relieved and we could help him made such an impact on my life that I knew that’s why I wanted to be a veterinarian.”” Dr Soares,You can make a huge impact & be a hero to the world. You can lead your assoc down the path to end declawing and relieve so much pain & suffering instead of allowing all your vets to cause so much of it. As in any journey, one must take that first step. Wouldn’t it be amazing if that first step started at your own AAHA hospital, & it became one that just heals and helps animals & doesn’t perform this elective, non-therapeutic mutilating procedure? You will be known as one of the honorable veterinary leaders who was on the right side of history to help end this very dark chapter in the American vetmed profession. #dotherightthing #integrity #pawsneedclaws
