Photo by @FransLanting A turquoise lagoon and barrier reef encircle the island of Bora Bora in French Polynesia, a scattering of 130-odd islands in the South Pacific. The weathered volcanic peak of Mount Otemanu rises 2,400 feet in the center of the island. I photographed Bora Bora from the air at midday to capture the jewel-like colors of the surrounding waters. Famed author James Michener called Bora Bora “the most beautiful island in the world.” Today, July 14, is the finale of "Tiurai," the biggest festival in French Polynesia--an annual celebration of Polynesian culture that lasts for a month and includes everything from outrigger races and dance competitions to reenactments of ancient ceremonies. #Follow me @FransLanting to see more images of exotic locations around the world.
