On August 3, 1975, “tens of thousands of New Yorkers drooped listlessly in parks or sought surcease in water or shade.” While streets in the city were relatively traffic-free, roads leading to beaches — like Coney Island, pictured here in a photo by @ニューヨーク・タイムズ photographer William Sauro — were jammed, as were the beaches themselves. The #ConeyIsland Chamber of Commerce reported a crowd of more than 1 million people, including more than 5,000 who slept on the beaches overnight, @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reported the following day. Meanwhile, in @centralparknyc, one of the few active figures was a baby chimpanzee in the park zoo. “He rolled on his back, twirled on a bar, did flip-flops and chattered energetically. The people watching him just stared and perspired.” #livelymorgue #tbt
