Day 10, 'O.G.' - Pendleton vegetable garden tended to by offenders for donating outside the prison (although a bite or two no doubt finds the growers' bellies). Positive work for the few with the privilege. Apparently, at one time, more acreage was farmed and also animals husbanded for meals inside (but no more of that) - better quality foodstuffs perhaps nurturing a sense of responsibility & usefulness for the grower and cheaper than buying on the outside (few fresh vegetables on the inside now). Homegrown veg cheaper than insulin, etc needed to offset the results of offenders' poorer diets, I imagine - no expert on the numbers & effects, but seems to this layman a win/win. Wanna eat reasonably well? Get out there and grow your own food, learn another way of reaping what you sew and save taxpayer money against your debt to society.
