Sunset over Stone Town, Zanzibar just two nights ago. This place evoked a gritty beauty like nothing I've experienced. Its labyrinth of alleyways and ornate architecture from the days of sultans captivated the imagination as we wandered through the maze of bazaars, mosques, and houses. The steady calm tone of the Islamic Call to Prayer five times a day, just days before the end of Ramadan - the holiest month on the Muslim calendar, evoked a sense of fascination and wonder only a foreigner can feel. And yet this place was also the epicenter of the slave trade during the 19th century, a tragic reminder of how cruel and evil we as a species can be, and how even though the world has changed in many obvious ways, our lack of understanding and mistreatment of one another seems perhaps just as prevalent. We continue to fight, to hate, to discriminate, to fear and to misunderstand one another. I landed in San Francisco after 40 hours of travel to sad news yet again, afraid to read the details, tired of the inevitable repercussions and flurry of politically-driven scapegoating that will ensue. But also I feel lucky. Not many people are able to do what I do and see the places I see. It's a great privilege to be able to experience such beauty in the world while remaining relatively unaffected by its ugliness. And now I'm almost home, just in time for the fireworks, feeling stoked and happy as usual, but still viscerally aware that it's not like that for everyone. I get to visit cool places, have self-fulfilling adventures, and take pretty pictures to share with you all. That feels silly at times, but I also feel it is an honor and a privilege. So thanks. Thanks for following, Happy Ramadan, Happy 4th of July, etc, etc, etc - whatever it is and wherever you come from - may it be full of gratitude, understanding, and peace. ?
