This July 4th, Barack Obama will preside over his last Independence Day as Commander-in-Chief.

Pete Souza (@petesouza), the president's official chief photographer, will follow Obama, Michelle, Sasha and Malia as they host military heroes and their families on the South Lawn of the White House. An afternoon barbeque will be followed by a concert and the traditional Fourth of July firework display.

For this year’s celebrations, Souza hopes to “make a picture that I haven’t made before,” he tells TIME. “That’s really my daily goal. It’s special only in the sense that I know this is the last time I’ll ever be on the roof of the White House during the fireworks.” Souza has selected, for TIME LightBox, his favorite images from the last seven Fourth of July.
