Elie Wiesel, an Auschwitz survivor who became an internationally acclaimed writer and activist and went on to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, died Saturday at age 87. Wiesel, who was a teenager when he was liberated from the Buchenwald concentration camp, gained attention for his autobiographical account of surviving the Holocaust when millions of others died, and the guilt he felt. He spent decades promoting education about the Holocaust and was recognized for those efforts by the Nobel committee in 1986. Later, he forced attention on mass atrocities like the massacres in Bosnia, Rwanda and Darfur.

In a statement about Wiesel’s death, President Obama called him “one of the great moral voices of our time, and in many ways, the conscience of the world.” Read more tributes to Elie Wiesel on TIME.com
