Part 2 of 3 of artist, filmmaker and curator @zswstudio's pineapple themed takeover, ahead of The Pineapple Show @tiwani_contemporary. "This is an image that I found online. It seems like this very innocent capture but there is a lot of potential subtext in it. I find pineapple farms and fields to be almost paranormal vistas. Alien landscapes. They are full of physical danger and yet here is this sunny woman, in her Sunday best, crouching and smiling blithely in this field, probably in the 1930s or 40s – a time when black life in the New World was still extremely compromised and not so far removed from slavery. I can't really tell what is real and what is not. It seems to be a black and white photo that has been colourised but the sky is simply painted on, so perhaps it's a set. You could read this image as representing leisure, but leisure for whom? Black leisure was not a straightforward or carefree pursuit, certainly not in those days. So in this image we see a tension between leisure and labour. Race and class. Though this photo is likely taken in the New World, this crouching pose is super Old World and African to me. I love it. I showed this image to artist Ayana Evans when I asked her to participate in the show. She loved it and was immediately drawn to the gloves, explaining that ideas around gentility and church-going, purity and slavery were all implicated in the white glove. The glove became a central motif to our video collaboration for the exhibition." #anothertakeover
