One of my favorite photos from one of my favorite books by one of New York's most beloved people, Bill Cunningham. "Facades" (1978) was a seven-year long project in which Bill and Editta Sherman, aka the Duchess of Carnegie Hall, used their weekends to photograph Bill's vintage collection against 1,800 New York locations. Hoping to highlight the connections between the architecture and fashion of each era, this was just one way in which Bill used his inimitable eye to celebrate fashion as an integral part of people's lives. I'm sorry to say that moving to NY has made me sometimes immune to the characters and landmarks that make this city so special, but Bill was alert to these glimmers of self-expression and community until the very end. Street style has taken on a new life in the past few years, but Bill's photos captured people showcasing their style against the backdrop of tangled crowds and a rapidly changing city. They're beautiful photos of visually stimulating outfits and fascinating documents of the cycle of trends, but they also capture the never-ending tug-o-war between one's selfhood and the desire to be a part of something bigger. I didn't know Bill, just bothered him once at Fashion Week to say the same thing everyone else does, and sprang to consciousness whenever I spotted him in his blue jacket and permanent grin for the years to come. One time there was this weird promotional ice cream truck outside a show, and the PR people were yelling for him to come try some, and he batted them away only to return a couple minutes later and get himself a scoop. It was so cute. He will be sorely missed. My wish for anyone reading this who takes no interest in fashion whatsoever is that you watch the documentary about him that's on Netflix, because it's so much bigger than fashion, it's a lesson in how to live and take pride in your work and be true to yourself. Oy, my heart hurts. There will never be another like him. Thank you for everything, Bill! We love you!
