This one here - my grandfather: William Henry "Cap'n 'Boo White'" Whiting, Sr., b. Seafood, VA July 22, 1904 and then got after it for 95 yrs - waterman, farmer, raconteur. Need a li'l taste? Got that, too. Not long on formal education - provided that to his children. Work to do from early on. Southern Man, remember? Never not moving until the Dodgers came on, a Jack Robinson - and Ali - Man. Negro league pitcher until in his 40's. Claimed to have pitched against Satchel Paige, but he spun a tale or two, always with a twinkling, smiling eye that would burst into rib-cracking laughter that gave it all away. Went nowhere without generosity of pocket, mind & wit - as gregarious as they come, especially when the bushel baskets were stuffed with new-caught crab, oysters or fresh corn, butter beans, okra, whatever. Straight business. Maybe need a right to the jaw to tighten up? Had it for you. All with love, respect for community - never missed a vote that I can remember - and the dignity of a tall, salt-of-the-earth-&-water country king. #HappyFathersDay, Pop Pop, to memories of you and to your everlasting spirit.
