The Red Eft is the juvenile stage of the Eastern Spotted Newt. I often see them on my morning walks. They cross the trail, amazingly all headed in the same direction guided by some internal magnet. The bright red of their bodies stands out garishly from the leaf litter on the forest floor. The color acts as a warning that they are poisonous but still only 2% of newts make it to adulthood where they will slip back into a pond, turn green and spend the rest of their lives.
