“Leonard told me this story: In the mid 1970s when he was photographing Sicily, Italy, he came upon a picturesque set of stairs leading to the top of the town. As he was standing there with his cameras in hand, he watched an impressive elderly man walking down the stairs. Fascinated by the movement, Leonard watched as the man descended the long stairs. At the bottom of the stairs the man turned to him and asked, ‘So, did you take a picture? It would be a good picture.’ Leonard agreed that it would but he had not taken a picture. He had really wanted to but was afraid the man might not like being photographed; maybe he was a Ma a hitman. He had just watched and enjoyed but missed those decisive moments to photograph. The funny part is the man was disappointed because he had walked carefully and slowly down those stairs so that he, the photographer, could take the picture.
