In the 1940s, #MoholyNagy used sheets of industrial Plexiglas to create hybrids of painting and sculpture that he called Space Modulators. The reflective and transparent qualities of the materials served Moholy’s purpose to modulate and activate light. He mounted the sheets on clips or rails that literally brought them off the wall by a few inches, opening up a space for cast shadows of a sort that he also prized so much in his photography. He had very precise directions for the placements of the light source. The light in many ways completed the work of art.
