Kazakh horsemen playing Kokpar in the Mangystau region of Kazakhstan. This ancient Central Asian sport has horse-mounted players attempting to drag a goat or calf carcass toward a goal. Banned during the Soviet era, today Kokpar is Kazakhstan's national sport, reviving a tradition that began in the 10th century.
Throughout Central Asia, Kokpar is known by many names - Buzkashi, Kupkari and Ulak Tartysh.
I am publishing the making of this National Geographic story on my #Snapchat account @stanmeyer, sharing short films of the making of this story for Nat Geo.
Additionally, @anushbabajanyan is turning the wheels heavily with social media over on the National Geographic Snapchat account, @ナショナルジオグラフィック, creating a very unique videos of behind the scene vignettes of of me working on this project.
Follow both Snapchat accounts for a deeply layered social media experience of how National Geographic stories are created.
Be sure to also follow my IG account @ジョン・スタンメイヤー for photos from the steppes of Kazakhstan.
All my best,
John Stanmeyer
