@ianwillms photographed charred trees near Fort McMurray on Sunday. Scientists say the near-destruction of the Alberta community by #wildfire is the latest sign that the boreal forest is at risk from climate change. The boreal region — which consists mainly of cone-bearing trees like pines, spruces and larches — stretches through Alaska, Canada, Scandinavia and Russia. Alaska had its 2nd-largest fire season on record last year. And in Russia, about 70 million acres burned in 2012, much of that in Siberia. Experts say governments need to find new ways to think about managing forests and protecting communities. But the dangers go far beyond the risk to people on the front lines. A large-scale loss of the #borealforest could have profound consequences for efforts to limit the damage from #climatechange. Visit the link in our profile to read more.
