An auto technician turned college professor, Raymond is emblematic of a new wave of highly educated technicians who are redefining the boundaries of what it means to build an automobile. “You almost need a PhD just to figure out how the technology of a Mirai works,” Raymond says. “In the fuel cell system, not only is there an engineering component, but there’s chemistry and a chemical reaction.” Hydrogen fuel cells generate electricity by combining hydrogen stored in tanks and oxygen from the air.
