The defender enjoyed a long and distinguished career, winning two African championships with TP Mazembe in 1967 and 1968 and helping Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo) become the first sub-Saharan African nation to reach the FIFA World Cup finals. He will always be remembered for the moment in the group-stage match against Brazil when he sprang out of the defensive wall at a free-kick and booted the ball down the pitch.
