#OnThisDay in 2006, Newcastle United captain Alan Shearer announced his retirement from football. After starting his career with Southampton, the striker left Blackburn to join his hometown club Newcastle in the summer of 1996 for a then world-record fee of £15m. Shearer is the Premier League's leading goalscorer of all time with 260 goals in 441 games. After making his England debut against France in 1992, he went on to score 30 goals in 63 appearances. In 1996, Shearer was third in the FIFA World Player of the Year awards.
