Maia Dua, from West Sacramento, California was selected from five finalists as Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War – Girls Reforming the Future Grand Prize Winner and will participate in a week-long internship at Marvel Studios. Maia won the contest by developing a “seeing eye” robot as a cost-effective and durable alternative to a seeing eye dog. The self-propelled, echo-locating “Seeing Eye-Bot” is made of readily accessible materials, making it more available to individuals of limited financial resources Maia hopes her invention can address the needs of the visually impaired, who may be unable or unwilling to own a seeing eye dog. "The average guide dog costs around $50,000 to train, pair with the right person and take care of. My robot, at retail, would cost around $600. My family and I were watching a German Shepherd puppy for a friend and we noticed how much work it takes to make sure he’s healthy so we thought about the challenges people with disabilities might face with a similar task.” - Maia Dua
