#OnThisDay in 1938, Steve Bloomer passed away. The English striker can be considered to be the world’s first great football player. Prolific in front of goal in the late 19th and early 20th century, he achieved legendary status at Derby County and scored goals at an astonishing rate at international level, setting records that would last several decades. The 317 top division goals he scored for Derby and Middlesbrough remained a record until passed by Jimmy Greaves more than 50 years later. Bloomer averaged more than a goal a game for his country. His final international tally was 28 goals in 23 games for England.
