Happy 24th birthday, Julie Johnston! The defender captained the United States team to win the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Japan 2012. Then a college student, she was awarded the adidas Bronze Ball as the third-best player of the tournament. Since then, Johnston has established herself as a permanent presence in central defence for both NWSL club Chicago Red Stars and the senior national team. She finished playing every minute of every game for the U.S. women’s national team during its run to the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015 victory. Johnston was one of the eight candidates on the shortlist for the adidas Golden Ball, for her outstanding game play throughout the tournament.
