#OnThisDay in 1967, Héctor Scarone died, aged 68. The forward was one of the central figures in the Uruguayan national team which dominated international football through the 1920s. During his international career he won numerous major titles. The 1930 FIFA World Cup would prove to be Scarone’s international farewell at the age of 31. In the final Uruguay defeated Argentina 4-2. This game was the forward’s last international appearance, and his total of 31 goals for ‘La Celeste’ remained a record until passed by Diego Forlán in 2011. At club level, Scarone spent most of his career with Nacional, winning several championship titles. He also played for FC Barcelona, and Inter Milan and Palermo in Italy.
