It’s hard to scroll through Daria Kobayashi Ritch’s Instagram feed (@dritch) without getting cool-girl envy. And it makes sense. “I’ve noticed the people I want to photograph are people who I find naturally cool without trying; someone I admire or want to be friends with,” the 24-year-old says of her young subjects. “I’m drawn to these kinds of people because they’re comfortable with themselves and that is something I feel I’ve struggled with personally.”

The L.A.-based photog, who cites Cass Bird and Harley Weir among her favorite women behind the lens, also uses fashion as a means to express herself. “Clothing and accessories can transport you or make you feel a certain way,” Daria says. "Regardless if you dress up or dress down, it says something about who you are at that moment in time.”

Her love of dressing up and the rise of social media both played a role in her love for her art form of choice. “I think I got into photography because of MySpace,” she says. “I distinctly remember dressing up and going around town with my girlfriends taking photos of each other for our profile pictures.” For her, #GirlGaze is partially about being unapologetically a girl. “Our work cannot be separated from who we are and a huge part of that is our gender,” Daria says. “I am a relatively shy, petite, 24-year-old girl and my work is connected with my ability to connect with the subject and capture raw and vulnerable moments.” - Words by @hannamariehoward.
