The characters of Rat and Bear—the iconic alter egos of Swiss artists #FischliWeiss—evolved out of happenstance during their time in Los Angeles, where they were both struck by the overwhelming presence of the film industry in Hollywood. Peter Fischli chanced upon a costume supply store for films that fascinated him, and he convinced David Weiss to go back posing as movie directors. When asked what they were looking for, the artists spontaneously responded “animal costumes” and were instantly attracted to those of a brown rat and a panda bear. The other animal costumes appeared too Disneylike in contrast to the shabby condition of the rat and bear. It became immediately apparent to the artists that they would actually make a film, “turning the lie” that gained them entry to the store “into truth.” Follow the adventures of Rat and Bear as they set out to strike it rich in the Los Angeles art world in “The Least Resistance” (1980-81, 29 min.), screened daily at 11 am, 12:30 pm, 2 pm, and 3:30 pm in our New Media Theater. FREE with museum admission. Learn more at guggenheim.org/fischliweiss.
