As we end #RoadDobs 2016 I've found myself thinking a good deal about delays and detours. When our car died - after a long series of events - we ended up in Albuquerque getting the vehicle fixed. It was stressful and unpleasant... at first. But then, we saw a bowling alley next to the repair shop and though, "Random but why not? When else are we going to take the kids bowling??" THEN, across from the bowling alley, was a BLAKE'S LOTABURGER. That may not matter to anyone else, but I grew up in southern Colorado where the only TV stations you could get with an antenna were from New Mexico. So when my siblings and I were allowed to watch, say, Full House, we also ended up with ads for businesses in Albuquerque. One of those frequent ads was for a restaurant called #BlakesLotaburger. For a permanently hungry growing kid, that place filled my imagination with dreams of green chili cheese burgers. But those dreams wouldn't be realized for 20 years. You know that cliche "It's not the destination, but the journey"? I think, when we say it, we are still assuming we get to decide where we're going to end up and the phrase is just a reminder to enjoy the ride. But maybe we don't always get to decide. My friend @lmillerwrites has done quite a bit of writing about detours and she has thoughtfully pointed out that the place we end up is often better than where we would have picked. Think what we would have missed: Bowling with my kids! Green chili cheese burgers! Yes, pushed off course - but maybe the course was mediocre and boring. After the car was fixed, we ended our day at the #PetrifiedForest. 200 million years ago, a bunch of huge trees were washed into a lake full of volcanic silt. The dead trees absorbed tons of silica which then slowly turned into rainbow arrays of glittering quartz. Weird detour, right? A long, LONG displaced journey for a dead tree to be born again as something far more spectacular than a rotting log at the bottom of a lake. But all kinds of little broken moments were necessary for it to be possible; little bumps, deaths, hiccups, bruises, detours... Then, a brilliant new reality is born from that death. Oh and speaking of, Happy #Easter
