I snapped this mid-trip. I mean - not middle of our #RoadDobs trip (though I guess it is) - he's actually in the middle of tripping, falling out of this fake tepee. We didn't know it was fake when we pulled up. The #truckstop billboards had successfully coaxed us off the highway with promises of authentic Native American pottery and "moccasins for the whole family!" Alas, it was not what we'd expected. If you look closely you can see the tepee is made of plywood sheets with a entrance painted on. Someone busted a hole through it so you can now climb in but I'm pretty sure it wasn't part of the initial architectural design. Probably some dad who was pissed he'd pulled over for this fake tepee and he kicked a hole in it. Anyhow, our car (like his) followed the herd, lumbering up the exit chute and into the truck(stop) because... I guess it seemed like the right thing to do. Oops. That's probably what the cows think too. "Oops."

Interestingly, last night we watched #TheBigShort and it's had me thinking about herd mentality; how a big group of people can be eased into a very bad idea if you just give them enough initial satisfaction to do so. I don't NEED a family set of moccasins just like I don't need a bigger house, but rates are so low! Investors are buying the subprime loan swaps! When are we gonna get another chance like this!? I mean, they're AUTHENTIC NATIVE AMERICAN MOCCASINS (tribe unspecified).

I wonder if that's what happened yesterday, Palm Sunday - but a couple thousand years ago - when people got excited over this guy who was gonna save them from Rome. They'd heard he could do some fancy tricks, had some crowd fervor behind him... It felt right. It felt like what they wanted and had been anticipating. So the herd welcomed him on their terms - parading him in. But when this Jewish prophet told them he'd come to do something else entirely, they got a little tripped up on that. And they got a little crucify-y. Because they'd forgotten that no one really gets rescued, no person is made whole, by political upheaval. Just like no financial structure can function with systemic fraud. Just like there are no authentic tepees at truck stops.
