For the past 2 years, Shakespeare’s @the_globe has been presenting #Hamlet in small theaters and to audience members who may never have seen a professional production before. One goal of this stripped-down version — with 8 to 12 cast members — was to perform the play around the world. Hamlet seems a fitting choice for the task: it was performed on a ship off what is now Sierra Leone just 5 years after its London debut, which occurred around 1600. The more recent tour started in 2014, on the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth, and it will end next month in London, after traveling to around 200 countries, to commemorate the 400th anniversary of his death. For the cast, many stops have been sobering. Last month, the group performed to a largely male audience at a refugee camp in Calais, France. The photographer @giannicipriano captured a performance at the Salesian Theater in Sliema, Malta.
