#OnThisDay in 2011, Ladislav Novak, captain of the Czechoslovakia side that lost to Brazil in the 1962 FIFA World Cup™ final in Chile, died aged 79. The defender, who also played in the side that placed third at the 1960 European championships, played 75 games for Czechoslovakia between 1952-1966, 71 of them as team captain. With Dukla Prague, Novak won eight league titles in the former Czechoslovakia which split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 1993. After hanging up his boots, Novak became a coach, leading the Czechoslovak national team in 1971-72. He also coached Belgian sides Lokeren, Royal Antwerp and Beerschot before winning another Czechoslovak league title with Dukla Prague in 1982.
