The principal islands in the Falkland group are about 300 miles east of South America's Patagonian coast. Saunders is the 4th largest of the Falklands with an area of about 51 sq mi(132 km2) Saunders has been identified as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by Birdlife International, with Falkland steamer ducks, ruddy-headed geese and several different type penguins.
