Photo by @tylermetcalfe // A banyan tree found on the Pīpīwai Trail in Haleakalā National Park, Maui, Hawaii. These massive trees are figs that have germinated and grown inside another host tree. The seeds of the plant fall into the cracks of a host tree, and if lucky enough, germinate. Over time it drops its roots and branches around its host, supporting both trees. Also interesting: The trees' seeds are dispersed by birds and pollinated by fig wasps (which seek shelter and food inside the fig fruit). #findyourpark @gohawaii #lethawaiihappen
