A maintenance worker Managua, Nicaragua, walked by a mural of Fidel Castro of Cuba and President Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua. Since being re-elected in 2006, President Ortega has come to rule over #Nicaragua in sweeping fashion. He has developed the economy and minted new millionaires, but also outraged an array of opponents who condemn his tight control over elections, Congress, the police, the military and the courts. Violent opposition from small groups of rebels — including skirmishes in rural areas as recently as last week — reflects broader anger brewing against the president. @meridithkohut, a freelance photographer based in Venezuela, took this photo while on #nytassignment.
