After undergoing life-threatening lung surgery at 9 years old, @ioecho singer Ioanna Gika found solace in the movie “Beetlejuice.” “A film like that made death seem like such a party because they were dead but they were finding moments of comedy,” she says. That balance between light and dark has since found its way into Ioanna’s songwriting (and nail art). Before forming Io Echo with Leopold Ross, she lived briefly in Jakarta, Indonesia, where her stepfather and mother were stationed (her stepfather was nearly killed there in 2004, when a terrorist bomb exploded near the Greek embassy). Her experience in Asia would go on to have a major influence on the Los Angeles-based band’s debut full-length, “Ministry of Love.” Now Ionna and Leopold are hard at work on their follow-up effort, which is set to drop later this year. This will be different than our first album,” she says. “I want to be more open.”
