Drive up the right road in Glendale, California, and you can hear anything: the thrum of a dubbed-out bass guitar; a roving, reverbed electric piano; intergalactic synthesizers. You might even see a little smoke. That’s because the SoCal hills are alive with the vibes of @davesitek, musician, record producer and founding member of art rock legends @tvontheradio. These days, Dave spends most of his time up here at his home studio, which he calls Federal Prism, recording music with everyone from Vic Mensa to Santigold, and making and sharing colorfully eccentric video art and cartoons. The West Coast is an unexpected landing point for a man who helped steer the sound of New York’s downtown rock scene in the early 2000s. But once Dave made a trip to Los Angeles in 2010, he never looked back. “There’s so much pressure to succeed [in New York City]. It’s like one failure could f--- your whole sh-- up,” he says. “Out here you can fail and fail again; it’s still kind of the Wild West.”
