Thy Sovantha, Cambodia’s youngest political star, rocketed to fame during the 2013 elections when she backed the opposition’s effort to unseat the country’s authoritarian ruler. At 18, she became perhaps the most powerful voice of her generation — the first in Cambodia to grow up after the horrors of the Khmer Rouge regime had faded and the economy began to grow at a rapid clip. With two-thirds of the population under 30, Cambodia is one of the youngest nations in Asia. And compared to previous generations, Thy and her peers are better educated, more skeptical and most importantly, politically restless, having outgrown the authoritarian style and patronage system of Prime Minister Hun Sen, a former Khmer Rouge fighter, who for 30 years has wielded power through a combination of threats, clever deal-making and sheer willpower. @lucforsyth photographed Thy sitting in her new video recording studio in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
