Photo by @argonautphoto (Aaron Huey). A young initiate of the #ParaminBlueDevils. Carnival is not just the bikini and feather displays that most Travel magazines showcase every year. Its origins are much more interesting and raw and often dark. In the #TraditionalMas of #PortofSpain, #Trinidad you will see Bats, Dragons, "Fancy Indians," "Midnight Robbers," #MokoJumbies, #PierrotGrenade, and in this photo - a Blue Devil in the village of #Parsmin! The blue devils are the most energetic traditional characters in the Carnival of Trinidad and come out of the tradition of the #JabMolassie, French vernacular for "Molasses Devil." The jab malassie would cover his body with blue paint, carry chains, and wear locks and keys around his waist (sometimes restrained by an imp with a rope), and carry a pitch fork demanding money from people in the streets u holding one finger in the air. Shot on assignment for @National Geographic Travel #TrinidadCarnival2016. More photos of this tradition at @argonautphoto
