Several years ago after a mammogram detected a suspicious lump, I had a lumpectomy. They assured me it was a simple procedure and I had nothing to worry about, but - between us ladies - that lumpectomy was a M*****F*****.
It was so painful, I finally fainted. When I came to, the sweet nurse said, "Yeah, that happens a lot, I wish the doctors would warn people." I had a happy ending to my story. The tests were negative, and all is well. BUT If I have to do it again, I am going into a twilight sleep. I might have to talk the physicians into it as their party line seems to be, "It's not a big deal! It's not painful" - to which I will reply, "Really? Let's jab a sharp ice pick in your testicles and see if you need a little Percocet/Valium combo?"
So yes, do self exams regularly, and talk to your doctor about mammograms. But in the spirit of the WTF community, since I wish someone had told me, I am telling you. If you have to get a lumpectomy:
1. Don't freak out.
2. Get a good doctor with a great bedside manner, because (of course) you are going to freak out.
3. Get medication for the procedure. Even if you have to arm wrestle it from the doctor. #repost @whattheflicka
