My girls are now 13 and 15 and totally allergic to any kind of serious talk. If Bill and I said we are having a "family meeting," they would stab themselves in the leg with a lead pencil and find the emergency room visit a welcome alternative. So, how do we keep their attention for serious conversations? A friend told me a long time ago to ban cell phones in the car. It seemed like a silly rule at the time, but since I am a lemming I followed her advice and have been thanking her ever since. They can't escape to their texts, or social media, or silly videos, or tune us out with earbuds. So we talk or listen to music, or secretly sneak in a "family meeting." It works like a charm. Except when it doesn't. @whattheflicka
