Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | Inside Colonel Driant’s command bunker on the battlefield of Verdun. Lieutenant Colonel Émile Driant was a French novelist, a member of the French parliament and an outspoken critic of France’s leading general in charge of WWI. He publicly admonished General Joseph Joffre for ordering that heavy guns be moved from Verdun to another part of the Western Front claiming that Joffre’s order made Verdun vulnerable to a German attack.

Driant was proved right when the German’s exploited this weakness by launching a massive attack on Verdun which ironically began at this very location in February, 1916. Driant and many of the 1,200 men under his command would die in the battle that he foresaw. After death, he became a legend for speaking truth to power and for losing his life as a consequence of the bad judgment by French military leaders that he exposed.
