Tech Tip Tuesday: Its that time of the week again, and this one is a doozy... Off camera lighting. People write books about it, there are websites dedicated to the craft of lighting, and I'm sure this is the first of many for me... So getting into a deep tech tip not my goal here. This image of @klemenpremrl was shot in an ice cave in Iceland with two @profotoglobal #B1 flashes (you could repeat this shot with speed lights honestly but the B1s are what I had). What I wanted the lighting to accomplish was to show the incredible ripples and waves in the surface of the ice cave. That meant my shadows needed hard edges to capture the texture.. Now here comes the tip... How 'hard' or 'soft' your shadows are, in any kind of lighting scenario, is the result of how big your light source is compared to the object it's lighting. You want soft lighting? Put a giant octobox on your strobe and get it close to the subject. For hard light you want the opposite scenario... Small light source a ways away... Think sunshine at midday. So hopefully you can guess that in order to get the hard lines I wanted in this image I didn't use soft boxes on the lights. The strobe that was in the cave to the left was a bare bulb and the one to the right was in a small reflector. Small light sources for hard shadows. Want to try this at home? Put someone next to a lamp with a shade on it, now watch what happens when you remove the shade. #techtiptuesday #camp4pix
