#Repost @drbirute with @repostapp. ・・・ Another photograph of Carmen! Sweet little orangutan orphan Carmen at OFI's Orangutan Care Center & Quarantine in Central Borneo is a victim of the massive deforestation taking place in Borneo right now due to the rapid expansion of palm oil plantations throughout the island. It will be years before Carmen grows older and can be returned to the wild. The question is will there still be forest left to allow her return? Even now it is difficult to find enough suitable forest so that wild born ex-captive orangutans can be safely returned to the wild. As for biologically viable orangutan populations in the wild, Tanjung Puting, where I have been working for 44 years, represents one of the largest wild orangutan populations in the world! Decades ago, there were larger orangutan populations in the wild but their numbers fell as their habitat succumbed to clearing and fires. The organization that I established in 1986, OFI, has made protection of wild orangutan forest habitat a priority so that orangutan infants like Carmen are not torn from their slaughtered mothers in the process of forest being cleared for industrial agriculture and wild orangutans can live peacefully in the forests that are rightfully theirs. | If you would like your photo's featured by us please tag your images with #ofi_australia and we will credit you! ? _____________________________________________ ?
