Elephants are left to roam freely from the early evening until the next morning. Myanmar has ended up with the largest population of captive Asian elephants in the world, the second largest population of Asian elephants overall. For decades, while the rest of the world modernized, Myanmar’s working elephants continued to live old-fashioned lives: As many as 5,000 of these animals still pull logs out of the forest just the way it was done a century ago.
