In "Gods and Monsters" (1998) I portray Hollywood director James Whale ("Frankenstein," "Showboat"), who was openly gay as early as the 1920s. Bill Condon won the Oscar for his screenplay adaptation and Lynn Redgrave won the Golden Globe for "Best Supporting Actress." Not bad for a low-budget indie film that never played on more than 165 screens in the US. Lynn and I were both nominated for Oscars but that year belonged to Roberto Benigni. "Gods and Monsters" has enjoyed a long life and big success on home video.
